Before buying from AliExpress in the Netherlands, look at the transaction as a whole: the seller, shipping origin, total in euros, taxes and any later import or handling charge. A product's low headline price says little about the final delivered cost, particularly when the parcel arrives from outside the European Union.

Choose a listing that suits your Dutch address
Set your delivery country to the Netherlands and supply the correct postcode before comparing options. A listing may ship to one address and not another, or quote a different price and arrival window for a different variation. Review the seller's actual identity, product specifications, recent photo reviews, return destination and dispatch information. An advertised European warehouse does not itself establish permanent stock in the Netherlands or confirm which carrier will handle the parcel.
Dutch consumer authority ACM ConsuWijzer advises people buying from international sellers to check trader reliability and location, import and return costs, payment safety and redress options. If the seller is outside the EU, enforcing a right may be harder even where consumer law applies. For goods subject to European safety rules, read the product-specific information and relevant warnings rather than relying on a high rating.
VAT and customs costs for Netherlands orders
VAT is not the same as customs duty. EU IOSS permits qualifying sellers or marketplaces to collect VAT at checkout for eligible imported distance-sale consignments up to €150, excluding excise goods; you cannot assume that a particular order uses IOSS without examining the transaction. The Dutch tax authority Belastingdienst explains the import scheme. Save the payment receipt and any VAT breakdown.
Dutch Customs identifies several possible extra costs on goods arriving from outside the EU, including VAT, import duty, transport and separate carrier or clearance-service fees. Its online-order cost guidance makes clear that the actual cost depends on the goods and the shipment. Do not assume every low-value order has the same customs charge. Check the amount due for your goods and import route, and distinguish VAT, customs duty and the carrier’s clearance fee when comparing the total cost.

Tracking and delivery within the Netherlands
There is no trustworthy one-size-fits-all delivery window for AliExpress to the Netherlands. The listing's shipping service and postcode-specific estimate are the useful starting points. After dispatch, save the tracking number; you can enter it in the parcel tracking tool. Updates may change as the shipment passes between transport operators. A tracking event mentioning customs does not automatically mean that Dutch Customs holds the package.
According to Dutch Customs' parcel guidance, the transport company normally handles customs declarations and is the appropriate contact about delivery status and import-charge collection. If your tracking names PostNL, its international parcel instructions explain how customers may view and pay clearance charges through the relevant tracking/payment process. Do not assume PostNL handles every AliExpress shipment, or that every buyer will see the same service charge or delivery date.
Payment, currency and offers
Compare the complete checkout total in euros and check the currency ultimately charged by the payment provider. The presence of EUR on the screen does not guarantee a specific bank conversion result. Available payment methods vary with the checkout; never assume iDEAL, Klarna or another method will appear solely because the buyer is in the Netherlands. If you use a promotion, review eligibility, expiry, minimum spend, item exclusions and the final cart total. An apparent sale price that excludes shipping or later import costs may not be a saving.

What happens if you need a refund?
EU consumers generally have a 14-day withdrawal right for qualifying distance purchases from traders, with exceptions, and a separate legal guarantee regime for qualifying goods. Whether and how those protections apply depends on the seller and contract. They are not identical to AliExpress dispute/refund procedures or the optional “Free Return” label, which applies only to participating products under its conditions. Keep screenshots, order details and tracking. Check the return address and postage before shipping an item back, and act before the relevant platform or statutory deadline.
